Frequently Asked Questions
- Who may enter?
Students currently enrolled in a community college, college or university may apply. Only the student producer of record may enter and must be listed as such on the credit list. The exception to this rule is in the Music Composition Category. The producer OR student composer may enter on the Composer’s behalf. The Composer will be named as winner in that particular category.
- Can professionals have worked on the project?
Professionals may NOT have functioned in the following positions:
- Producer
- Executive Producer (unless this title is given to the faculty advisor as "special thanks")
- Director
- Director of Photography
- Camera
- Sound Recording & Off-line Sound Editing
- Off-line Picture Editor
- Lighting Director
- Technical Director
- Production Manager/AD
For entries in the "Best Composition" area of the Music category, all composers must be students. This will be verified. - During what time frame must the project have been made?
All entries must have been made while student was/is enrolled in college/university between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009 confirmed by a faculty advisor.
- Are U.S. Citizens eligible if they produced their film at a college outside the U.S.?
No. This competition is only open to those students who have produced their video while enrolled in a community college, college or university the United States.
- Are non-U.S. Citizens eligible if they produced their film at a U.S. College?
Yes, as long as all eligibility requirements are met and confirmed by a faculty advisor.
- Are Graduate Student Films eligible?
Yes, as long as all eligibility requirements are met and confirmed by a faculty advisor.
- What is the purpose of the competition?
The College Television Awards competition rewards excellence in college student video, digital and film productions by honoring student producers.
While we recognize the various individual talents and efforts required to bring a video, digital or film project to fruition, these awards reflect the form and structure of the television industry. The producer is recognized by the Television Academy Foundation as the entity mainly and ultimately responsible for the whole and final product (with the exception of music composition).
- What role can faculty have played?
Faculty can act in an advisory capacity only.
- Are the winning projects screened for members of the Entertainment Industry?
Promos of the first, second and third place winners are screened at the Awards Gala. The following day, first place works are shown in full at the College TV Awards Screening, along with montages of the second and third place winners.
Winning pieces will also be available online (subject to and only with proper clearance) on mtvU.com.
- How will my piece be judged?
Entries will be judged online by category in preliminary and secondary panels on a secure server by members of the Television Academy who are professionals working in each respective discipline. Viewing is restricted to competition judges and staff only. Your entry will reflect the video portion as "pending" on mtvU until after the competition.
Finalists in each category will proceed to Blue Ribbon Panels for selection of winners. Blue Ribbon finalists will be notified and will be required to send a high resolution DVD of their work to the Television Academy Foundation immediately upon notification. If we do not receive your materials by the due date, you will be disqualified. This will be in early to mid February 2010. Blue Ribbon panels will be judged at the Television Academy offices.
- Will I be notified even if I don't win?
Yes. All entrants will be notified of their final status once winners' information has been verified.
- How do I get to Los Angeles for the Gala and Screening if I win?
Only one student producer of record for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place winning entries will be flown to Los Angeles and given hotel accommodations for the black-tie Awards Gala and Screenings in April 2010. All other winning producers are invited to attend, however they will need to arrange for their own transportation and accommodation.
- If there is more than one producer on my winning piece, how is the cash awarded?
Each producer will receive a personalized trophy or plaque and the cash award will be shared evenly with all producers.
- What is Honorable Mention?
Honorable Mention winners may be awarded in any category at the judges’ discretion.
No financial award is made. A certificate will be mailed separately. Honorable Mention winners will be recognized at the Gala and
will be invited to attend. However, they will be responsible for their own expenses. -
